As we continue our commitments to sustainability, we want to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of  recycling and waste sorting within our buildings, and for office users to continue to sort their personal deskside waste.

In 2012, UBC Facilities formally moved towards a self-sort model for deskside waste in offices, and installed centralized Sort it Out  stations in common areas throughout the buildings in line with the requirements of the Waste Requirements for Green Buildings.

Every office space was supplied with a small blue deskside waste bin and a smaller black ‘mywaste’ bin to go under each desk space. The small blue and black containers are assigned to each office user to sort and dispose of waste into the centralized sorting stations. Custodial staff are not involved in sorting deskside waste.

What we are asking

As we strive to maintain our momentum in sustainability, we ask the community to:

Lead by example:

Set a positive example by consistently recycling and sorting your deskside waste containers into the centralized sorting stations.

Educate others:

Please share this reminder with others in your department as an opportunity to remind your colleagues about the importance of recycling and waste sorting and encourage their participation.

Monitor recycling stations:

Please enter a request via Planon. for any missing or damaged signage at any recycling stations in your area to ensure they are well-maintained and properly labeled.

Together, we can make a meaningful difference in reducing our environmental footprint and creating a more sustainable future.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

If you have any questions, need assistance or would like to provide suggestions regarding recycling and waste sorting, please don’t hesitate to contact your Facilities Manager.
