The fall term events for the JEDII STEM Series are now up with the first event next week (Thursday 2-3:30 pm). We would greatly appreciate it if you can forward this through your networks.

Using demographic data and frameworks to plan and evaluate JEDII Initiatives

When: October 27, 2022 @ 2 pm

Using demographic data can enable your unit to better support inclusion and success, and assess the progress of equity, diversity, and inclusion priorities. Join Paul Hancock from the Office of the University Counsel, Information and Privacy and Data, and experts from the Equity & Inclusion Office’s Planning and Evaluation team to learn how you can use demographic data to support JEDII initiatives in your unit.

The new Associate Vice-President of Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Arig al Shaibah, will join the latter half of the session to answer your questions about the proposed framework to operationalize Inclusive Excellence and Anti-Racism at UBC. Read her message to the UBC community on Actioning UBC’s commitments to equity and anti-racism.

Building respectful and reciprocal engagements with Indigenous communities and governments

When: November 17, 2022

Many fields within STEM now require us to learn how to build stronger relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities. This can be intimidating for settlers who have never before built these types of relationships. We hope that this session will help participants deepen and broaden their lens on why they might want to engage with Indigenous peoples, and provide opportunities for participants to sit through some of these discomforts and avoid some common mistakes in order to build reciprocal and respectful engagements.
